GSQT – Because of online courses, Harvard’s Extension School has more students than members of Harvard University combined.
Operating for 109 years, Harvard Extension School is one of twelve degree-granting institutions in Harvard. Initially, school’s goal was to provide higher education with low school fee. Professor. Hunt Lambert, Principal of Harvard’s Extension School shared that school is trying to carry out its mission of expanding knowledge from Harvard to the world.
New direction for universities
Professor Lambert said that university has developed networking and technology to host 600 online classes, 6 times of the number in 5 years ago. In 2016, the number of students at Harvard University is much more than the total students in left campus of Harvard. Accordingly, school provides about 100 online courses, with 6 million registers. According to Harvard, technology can be used to reach more people at fit cost.
In US, there are now 300,000 full-time undergraduate students, but up to 30 million have not yet attended the classes. Most of them cannot go to school because they are busy or teaching method at this university is not suitable for them.
At many universities, expansion of university is seen as a new step when it comes to online education. Accordingly, students from all over the world and their teachers feel as close as when they are in a class but are more active in their places and time. These 250 classrooms have been in development for 3 years and keep going.
The value of online college
Online courses such as the Harvard Extension School help many individuals, vary in age and qualifications to attend.
With such a broad student population, Harvard Extension has a new term, “60-Year Program”” – which provides knowledge to all students, ages 15 to 75. Harvard School Principal Extension said: “Knowledge work needs continuous training, and they need to be educated and that’s what school is doing.”
As with other online training schools, in addition to designing the right course, Harvard extends also to apply ways to increase student completion rates. One of those ways is to split the course. Multiple sessions of 12-16 weeks were reduced to 3-4 weeks; making course completion rate higher. In addition, courses are more professionally oriented, giving learners the motivation to follow along, just like Harvard University.
