GSQT – Many countries around the world are also arguing about whether to let students use phones in class because of the confusion between the great benefits and the harm associated with smart devices.
“Live together” instead of banning
Some parents believe that it is essential for students use phones in class. Instead of banning them, they should teach children how to use technology responsibly. These people also believe that smartphones can also be convenient educational tools that provide useful learning resources. That is why many places, especially in the US, allow children to bring their phones to school but not in the classroom.
In the US, there are different policies in different states on this issue. For example, according to USA Today, Ms. Liz Kline, vice president of education at Common Sense Education in San Francisco Bay Area – an organization that advocates the mission of helping children develop well in the world of media and technology, which “should have a plan instead of a ban”.
“There are legitimate learning environments for using these devices in the classroom”, said Ms. Kline, citing examples of how students can make films or learn about photography. She also admits that distributed digital devices are “purely realistic” and it is not easy to establish rules for using phones in the classroom.
Many places ban rather than compromise
Since 2020, Western Australia have officially introduced a policy that prohibits students use phones in class because this device is distracting and lead the main cause of bullying in schools. Before Western Australia, France and China have had similar laws since 2018.
Western Australia’s phone ban applies to all schools across the state. Cell phones are banned from the time students arrive at school until the end of school, and completely banned from the time before school to breaks between hours.
According to the law, The Conversation (Australia) says, “students must turn off their cell phones and put them in their lockers as soon as they arrive at school until the bell rings.”
