GRE exam overview
GRE is a test that helps universities or scholarship organizations assess the ability of candidates to apply for study masters in US.
GRE can be administered in the form of computer test (CBT) and paper test (PBT) to a more limited extent. GRE score is valid for 5 years and is accepted by more than 500 leading schools around the world such as Harvard, MIT, Wharton, INSEAD…
The test has two formats: General Test is for students who study postgraduate, test candidates for 3 basic competencies: Verbal, Math and Analytical Writing. Meanwhile, Subject Test is specialized tests in 8 areas (Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science…).
To determine the test, you need to refer to the curriculum you register. For areas where there is no specialized test, you should choose the general test.

- Time: It takes a minimum of about 3-6 months to study for the exam, it is best to spend a year to review deeply. You should spend at least 15 minutes regularly every day to study vocabulary and practice the knowledge that has been acquired. During the exam review process, especially in the 3 months before the exam, you need to focus on solving the problem, so that you can do the test faster and you will not be pressured by the time.
- Materials: The amount of GRE knowledge is very large, so you have to be really careful in choosing an exam preparation course. When choosing a book, make sure that you do not make a choice based on the author, see if the content is suitable for your current exam preparation period. The exam is general in nature, so you should only choose the textbooks to avoid the “information disorder”.
- Understand the structure: Knowing the content of each section will help you divide the practice time. It is possible to spend 70% of the time on the Verbal test because this part is the most effort-intensive, so you should start practicing this section first after learning new words. Because the Math section only tests basic knowledge, it only takes 20% of the time to review and embark. For the Writing section, depending on the requirements you are applying for, you focus on revision. Because some majors do not require this score, you can skip it, but for others like Literature or Education, you should invest at least 10% of the time.
