GSQT – Nowadays, Vietnamese students are being provided with the best conditions for approaching advanced education of the world through learning integrated syllabus in English. Integrated Chemistry is being focused the most. However, most of the students are wondering about the teaching methods and where is the place to learn integrated Chemistry syllabus.
English integrated program was approved by the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City according to Decree 5659/QĐ-UBND on 20/11/2014. The Decree states that from school year of 2015 – 2016, there are 47 elementary schools, 26 secondary schools and 16 high schools start to include this syllabus. And one of the subjects make students concerned the most is integrated Chemistry.
Unlike other subjects, Chemistry is brought into teaching quite late, usually in the third year of secondary level (equivalent to grade 8). Therefore, students still cannot completely adapt and gain enough in-depth knowledge of this subject before moving on to the next level in high school. Furthermore, Chemistry is applied in the first years of higher education. The transition of language and studying environment have made many students shocked and feel hard to follow the class process.
Integrated Chemistry requires students to master not only the specialized knowledge but also the English skills, especially academic English. Besides, students also have to be active and highly interactive during class time in order to absorb fully the new knowledge and skills of the subject. Furthermore, they need to self-study to enrich the chemical knowledge and English to be more flexible in class.
Learners of integrated Chemistry syllabus need to refer specialized academic English terms, read more scientific books or watch related program in English. At first, these activities may cause difficulties for students. However, once they adapt to it, this can be an amazing learning method. Nevertheless, the best one is to have support from Chemistry tutor to have good orientation and be answered when needed. Interacting in English regularly with tutors also improves your confidence, your activeness when communicating in English during class time or even in your daily life.
