The high school entrance exam, also known as SSAT, is a test of reasoning, language arts, math, and writing skills used to help determine admission to private American middle and high schools.
The test is developed and administered by The Secondary School Admission Test Board (SSATB). Designed for students in grade 3 through 11, SSAT is divided into 3 levels:

Grade 3-4 | Elementary Level Test | 900 – 1800 |
Grade 5-7 | Middle Level Test | 1320 – 2130 |
Grade 8-11 | Upper Level Test | 1500 – 2400 |

What is the SSAT exam format?
The time and difficulty of SSAT exam will vary by level. However, the test format for each section will be the same.
If you take the Elementary exam, the test will last about 110 minutes or 120 minutes with the following structure:

For the Middle and Upper exams, the test will last 170 minutes or 3 hours, using the following structure:

SSAT exam includes 2 exam formats:
- SSAT Standard Test – celebrated on eight Saturdays per year in many parts of the world. This is the test format for the majority of international students who want to study in the US.
- SSAT Flex Test – held for a specific number of individuals or groups of candidates on days other than the standard test days.

Note: You can only register for the Flex Test one time during exam season July 31 to August 1. Once you have completed the Flex Test, all other SSAT tests for your year should be the Standard Test. Now you know what is the SSAT exam format.
