1. Use synonyms instead

One effective way to use specialized English vocabulary is to replace synonyms for known words. We need to avoid using phrasal verbs and word repetition. When you write your essay, you can think of a familiar verb phrase first, then find an academic vocabulary that is synonymous with that verb phrase instead.

For example, “find out” = “discover”, “look for” = “search”, “give in” = “surrender”, “turn down” = “refuse”… With this method, you can also eliminate the use of verbs in academic papers.

2. Use words with more specific meanings

This is a common mistake for students. When writing essays, one of the things to avoid is the use of mass speech. For example, when synthesizing from a certain reading, instead of using familiar verbs with common meanings such as “say”, “show”, “report”… repeatedly, you need to think of more specific vocabulary like “outline”, “demonstrated”, “conclude”, “note”, “support”, “explain”…

3. Avoid using simple vocabulary

A hard habit for students to use is to use simple vocabulary in writing such as “good”, “bad”, “nice”, “little”, “just”… This should be avoided, or eliminated. Instead, replace those simple vocabulary with scholarly words like “bad” = “negative”, “nice” = “pleasant”, “just” = “absolutely”…

4. Improve the objectivity of the article

To enhance objectivity, students should start sentences with words like “IT” or “THERE”. With the subject “It”, you will avoid using personal and subjective subjects such as “I”, “We”, “Some people”… Similar to “IT”, if you memorize and use nouns, adjectives, adverbs in combination with “THERE”, your article will be more interesting and impressive for using specialized English vocabulary.
