GSQT – Dr. Pham Si Nam, lecturer at Saigon University, member of the drafting board of the new Mathematics General Education Program, has proposed teaching probability from grade 2 at the world’s educational trends conference.
In response to the recent feedback regarding this issue, Mr. Nam spent more time sharing: “Probability and statistics are the ones that come to life the most. Many people think that these are difficult and abstract content because the current program is only taught in grade 11, and statistics are also scattered from elementary schools, grade 7 and 10.”
“With the new program, teaching probability from grade 2 does not mean pulling the program from grade 11 to teach at grade 2 but that is the name of the circuit. Having knowledge requires a teaching process as well as a process for students to experience”.
Teaching probability from grade 2 means learn basic concepts of probability such as “certain” or “uncertain”. For example, if it is raining when outdoors, it is definitely wet or 100% wet. Probability will answer those questions rather than big calculations like grade 11. Also, not only in grade 2, but grade 3, 4 and higher levels must be continuous, do not break the circuit that students perceive.
Also according to Mr. Nam, the current program from the point of view of content approach is to answer the question of what students want to know and who have acquired many units are good, thus leading to inadequacies when there are students who have all 10 points in Physics but do not know how to get an electric board.
Dr. Nam affirmed that the new program would link Mathematics to life. He cited by asking questions from the fact why beer cans are cylindrical in shape and not spherical, and why Grab overwhelms traditional taxis, then confirms that mathematical knowledge can be explained.
