GSQT – Nguyen Cong Hinh, Director General of Regular Education and Training Department, shares that there will be a lot of difficulties in learning Vietnamese abroad in foreign countries.
In US, there are about 200 Vietnamese teaching centers, 39 in Thailand, 33 in Cambodia and about 13 in Laos. In Germany, France, Czech and Russia, there are also dozens of similar centers. However, these learning Vietnamese abroad facilities are usually small scale, spontaneous, they don’t have regular sponsors, poor-quality facilities and the number of students is low…
Teaching methods are usually face-to-face, partially online. In some countries, Vietnamese is taught as a foreign language, with Vietnamese students gathered in classes. And for those Vietnamese teaching centers held by other groups and organizations for overseas Vietnamese’s children are mostly opened on weekends, summer vacations or combined in tours, trip, sports events… Most of these learning Vietnamese abroad centers do not have textbooks, materials, dictionaries, CDs… and many of them use Vietnamese textbooks published by Vietnam Education Publishing House.
In recent years, some scholars in the Vietnamese overseas communities have compiled their own textbooks, materials, reference books, teaching – learning materials to support Vietnamese teaching, but generally speaking, they haven’t met the requirements of standard knowledge, not regularly updated. Specially, the alerting lack of qualified teachers, which are mostly volunteers who don’t have enough educational skills.
